Dear Distinguished Member of the Charlotte Community,

Marines have a proud tradition of serving our country since 1775.  Each year, around the globe, we gather to commemorate the founding of the Corps.  Please join us this November as we celebrate the 241st birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

The Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater Charlotte will host this year’s event. The Marine Coordinating Council of Greater Charlotte is a local, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting our local area Marines and their families.

The Charlotte area Marine Corps Birthday Ball will be held on Saturday, October 29th beginning at 5:30 pm at the Charlotte Convention Center. Our guest of honor will be General Glenn M. Walters, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Join us October 29th for a formal evening of Marine Corps tradition, history and celebration.

Sincerely,

LtGen Frank Panter, USMC (ret)

history - marine corps birthday ball

On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of "American Marines." Congress commissioned 31-year-old Samuel Nicholas, a well-known Philadelphian, as captain of the fledgling force of Continental Marines. Nicholas raised two battalions of Marines and began the long, illustrious history of the United States Marine Corps.

On November 1, 1921, General John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921. The order provided a summary of the history, mission, and traditions of the Corps. General Lejeune directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on November 10th in honor of the founding of the Marine Corps. This tradition has continued every year since 1921 throughout the Corps.

The first official "Birthday Ball" was probably held in 1925 in Philadelphia. No official records of the event were held prior to that date. Guests at the ball in 1925 included the Secretary of the Navy, General Lejeune, well-known national leaders, and representatives from all the military services.

On October 28, 1952, Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. directed the celebration of the Marine Corps Birthday be formalized throughout the Corps. The details were included in the Marine Corps Drill Manual approved in 1956. General Shepherd's order helped bring together the inclusion of a cake ceremony and other traditions still held every year at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater Charlotte (Carolina Marines)

We are grateful for any donations received from the Charlotte Marine Corps support community to help us in our mission. The Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater Charlotte (aka Carolina Marines), a 501(c)3 nonprofit, has been supporting Charlotte area Marine Corps families since 2006.

We are a dedicated group of volunteers with a mission to support Marines and their families and promote the Marine Corps in the Charlotte area through fundraising activities and events featuring Marine speakers.

Fundraisers are used to support Marine families. We assist the Family Readiness Officers and Coordinators with deployment and welcome home events, programs and family activities during deployments, the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball and we also provide emergency funds when a Marine and his/her family is in need. In addition, we also reserve funding for the families of Marines who are injured or killed in the line of duty.

When we do raise money, all net proceeds are donated to help Marines and their families. We do not have any paid staff nor are we compensated financially as we support the events and Marines.

Should you desire to help, we welcome any donation via our PayPal link below.

Thank you!
